Personal Care on the Gold Coast: Support That Feels Like Family
The phrase "feels like family" gets used a lot in this industry and usually means nothing. Here is what we mean by it: the person who helps you shower on Monday is the same person who helps you on Thursday, they already know you take your tea before the shower and not after, and if they cannot make it, the person who covers has read your care plan rather than a name and an address.

The Reality of Needing Personal Care
Almost nobody searches for personal care on a good day. People arrive here after something has shifted: a fall in the bathroom, a diagnosis, a hospital discharge with a page of instructions and no one at home to carry them out. Or the change happened slowly and a family has finally admitted out loud that the current arrangement is not holding.
Either way, there is a particular vulnerability in that moment. You are being asked to decide, often quickly, who gets to help with the most private parts of someone's day. And you are usually deciding on behalf of a person who would rather not need the help at all.
It helps to be clear about what personal care actually is. It is assistance with the everyday tasks of caring for your own body: washing, dressing, toileting, moving safely, eating. Under the NDIS it is funded from your Core Supports budget. It is not a step away from independence. For most of our participants, it is precisely what makes staying at home possible.
The Struggle With Finding the Right Support on the Gold Coast
The Gold Coast has no shortage of providers. Finding a good one is a different problem, and most families discover the difference the hard way.
The first hurdle is trust. Letting an unfamiliar person into the house is one thing. Letting them into the bathroom is another entirely, and no amount of marketing copy resolves that. It gets resolved by the same person turning up consistently for a few weeks.
The second is that a lot of agencies feel transactional. Calls go to a booking line. Rosters get built around staff availability. The care plan reads like it was written for somebody else, because it largely was.
Then there is turnover, which is the complaint we hear most. A new worker every week or two means explaining the same routine over and over, and it means a participant never gets to the point of relaxing during a shift. Underneath that sits the NDIS paperwork nobody has explained, and a quiet fear about what happens if something goes wrong at 6am and nobody answers the phone.
How Aussie Bridge Care Changes the Experience
Taking those in the same order.
One familiar worker wherever rostering allows. You have a primary support worker on your regular shifts, and one or two named backups who have read your care plan before their first visit. That is how trust gets built, and it is also what protects the routine when someone is sick.
Local coordinators who answer. Your Gold Coast coordinator knows your roster and takes your call. Management is reachable directly. There is no booking line standing between you and a decision.
A care plan built around the person. We start with the day you actually have. What time you like to get up, whether you want someone in the bathroom or the hallway, which parts of dressing you want to keep doing yourself, what your occupational therapist specified about transfers, whether you want a male or female worker, what cultural or religious requirements matter to you.
The NDIS side handled for you. We read your plan with you, map supports to line items, write the service agreement in plain English, and invoice in a way your plan manager will not have to query. Our pricing matches the NDIS Price Guide.
Availability when it counts. Early mornings, evenings, weekends, sleepovers and active overnight shifts. And a coordinator who picks up rather than a voicemail box.
Our Personal Care Services Across the Gold Coast
Personal Hygiene and Bathing Support
Showering or bathing with the level of assistance you want, washing, drying, oral care and skin checks. Your products, your routine, your choice of worker gender.
Dressing and Grooming Assistance
Dressing, fastenings, compression garments, shaving, hair and nail care. The worker covers what you need and leaves the rest to you.
Continence and Toileting Care
Discreet toileting support, continence aids and pad changes, and catheter or stoma routines where they sit inside a support worker's scope. Anything needing clinical oversight goes to our community nursing team rather than being stretched to fit.
Mobility and Transfer Help
Getting out of bed and moving between bed, chair, shower and car, using hoists, slide sheets and aids as prescribed. All workers are trained in manual handling, and two-person transfers are rostered with two people.
Medication Reminders
Prompts at the right time, help with dosette packs, confirmation the dose was taken, and escalation to your coordinator if something is missed. Administration is a nursing task and is treated as one.
Meal Support and Preparation
Shopping, cooking, portioning and assistance at the table, with mealtime management plans and texture requirements followed as written.
Respite and Overnight Care
Sleepover shifts, active overnight support, and respite blocks that continue the existing routine so a family carer can take a proper break.
Why Gold Coast Families Choose Aussie Bridge Care
We are here, not somewhere else. The Gold Coast runs 60 kilometres from Coomera to Coolangatta. Our workers live in the areas they work in, which is the only reliable way to make a 6:30am shift start at 6:30am.
Carers trained for dignity, not just for tasks. Manual handling, infection control and person-centred practice, plus an NDIS Worker Screening Check for every worker. Preferences about gender, culture and routine are recorded in the plan and applied to backups too.
Plans that flex. A few hours a week, several visits a day, a short-term increase after surgery, or ongoing long-term support. Respite added when a carer needs it.
Communication families can rely on. Shift notes, a named coordinator, and reviews when circumstances change rather than once a year because a system prompted it.
Twenty years of delivery behind it. We supported people in this community before the scheme existed, and we have been through plan reviews, provider transitions and hospital admissions with participants many times over.
Who We Help
- NDIS participants who need help with self-care, whether occasionally or every day
- People living with physical, neurological, intellectual or psychosocial disability, including participants with complex needs supported alongside our community nursing team
- People recovering after surgery or a hospital stay, where support steps up for a while and then steps down again
- Families who need short-term or regular respite
Getting Started Is Simple
First, a free conversation. Call 07 3472 7562 or request a call back, and a Gold Coast coordinator rings you within one business day. Nothing is signed at this point and there is no cost.
Then, a care plan built with you rather than handed to you. We meet at your home, online, or at our Brisbane office, and work through your routine task by task while reading your NDIS plan alongside it.
Next, we match you with a support worker. We propose one or two, you meet them, you choose. If it is not right after a few shifts, tell your coordinator and we will find someone who is.
Finally, ongoing check-ins. Shifts usually start within 7 to 10 days, or within 48 hours where a hospital discharge or urgent situation calls for it, and the plan gets reviewed as needs change.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is personal care covered under the NDIS?
Yes, where your disability means you need help with self-care. It is funded from your Core Supports budget, usually under Assistance with Daily Life or Assistance with Self-Care Activities, and Core Supports funding is generally flexible between those categories.
What is included in a personal care visit?
Whatever your care plan sets out. Commonly that is showering or bathing, dressing and grooming, toileting and continence support, transfers, medication prompts and help with a meal. A typical morning shift runs one to three hours.
Can we request the same carer each time?
Yes, and it is what we aim for. You have a primary support worker on your regular shifts with one or two named backups for when they are unavailable.
What areas of the Gold Coast do you cover?
The whole city, from Coomera and Helensvale in the north through Southport, Surfers Paradise and Robina to Palm Beach, Currumbin and Coolangatta in the south, plus the western suburbs around Nerang and Mudgeeraba.
How quickly can support start?
Most new participants have a first shift within 7 to 10 days of the first call. Hospital discharge and other urgent situations can often be started within 48 hours.
Can I request a male or female support worker?
Yes. We ask at the first meeting rather than waiting for you to raise it, and your preference applies to backup workers too.
