NDIS Positive Behaviour Support
Understanding the Why, Not Just the What
What Positive Behaviour Support Is
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a specialist NDIS service for participants whose behaviour sometimes puts themselves or others at risk. A registered behaviour support practitioner works with the participant, their family, and their support team to understand why the behaviour is happening and what environmental, medical, or emotional factors trigger it.
The outcome is a Positive Behaviour Support Plan (PBSP) — a written plan that sets out strategies for preventing, de-escalating, and responding to behaviours of concern in a way that respects the participant’s rights.
This isn’t about managing or controlling behaviour. It’s about understanding it. Behaviour is communication. When someone shouts, hits, or withdraws, they’re telling you something. A good PBSP translates that communication into something the support team can actually respond to.

Our Behaviour Support Practitioners
All our behaviour support practitioners are registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission under the relevant capability level:
- Core practitioners — for straightforward PBSPs
- Proficient practitioners — for PBSPs involving restrictive practices
- Advanced and Specialist practitioners — for complex cases, often involving forensic or high-risk behaviours
How the Process Works
- Referral and initial meeting — usually requested by the participant's support coordinator, family, or SIL provider.
- Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) — the practitioner spends time observing, interviewing, and reviewing records to understand what the behaviour is communicating.
- PBSP development — the plan is drafted collaboratively with the participant, family, and support team.
- Staff training — support workers and family are trained on the plan's strategies.
- Implementation and review — plans are reviewed every 12 months, sooner if circumstances change significantly.
Restrictive Practices
If a PBSP includes any restrictive practices (chemical, mechanical, environmental, physical restraint, or seclusion), the practitioner must be credentialed at Proficient level or above, the plan must be lodged with the NDIS Commission, and the practices must be reduced over time towards eliminating them wherever possible.
Aussie Bridge Care follows the NDIS Commission’s regulated restrictive practices framework in full. We don’t use undocumented restrictive practices, and every authorised restrictive practice has an explicit plan to reduce or remove it.
