NDIS Social & Community Participation

Real Activities, Not Filler

What Community Participation Means (And What It Doesn't)

Under the NDIS, Social and Community Participation funding pays for support workers who help you take part in community life. That’s the official definition. Here’s what it actually looks like in practice:

A support worker picks you up, takes you to the thing you want to do, stays with you while you do it, and brings you home. The activity might be a gym session, an art class, a lunch with friends, a Bunnings sausage sizzle on Saturday morning, or a drive out to see the Glasshouse Mountains.

What it isn’t: driving you somewhere random to tick a box. Dropping you at a day program you don’t enjoy. Group outings where the group is picked by the provider, not the participants. We don’t do any of that. Community participation should be built around what the person actually wants to do — anything else wastes funding and doesn’t build the skills or relationships the NDIS intends the category to build.

The dedicated team members of Aussie Bridge Care in Brisbane excel in providing outstanding services in terms of transforming the lives of people with disability. Through our personalized care plan and optimistic mindset of encouraging you to engage in social activities, we ensure that you can lead a better and an independent life. You can engage with the providers of Aussie Bridge Care due to specific reasons which are mentioned below.

Our Group Programs

Some activities work better in groups. Participants make friends, share costs, and get the social experience they’d miss in 1:1 outings. Our regular groups currently run across multiple regions:

Group program spots open up regularly. Call 07 3472 7562 to see what’s currently available in your region.

Community Access

If groups aren’t your thing — and for plenty of people they aren’t — we run 1:1 community access support. A single support worker, matched to you, taking you to the activities you choose. Typical 1:1 rosters run from 2 hours to 8 hours per week.
This is where careful matching matters. The support worker who takes you to the gym each week should be someone you actually want to spend time with. We match on personality, shared interests, language, and cultural background.

Transport — How Getting There Works

Most community participation support includes transport, because getting to the activity is often half the challenge. Our options:

Transport costs are generally funded under your Core Supports (Assistance with Social and Community Participation) or under the separate Transport budget in your NDIS plan. We’ll map it for you before the first shift so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Building Skills That Stick

The NDIS is clear about what community participation funding is for: building skills for social and community engagement, not creating ongoing dependence. A good provider works towards participants needing less support over time, not more. What that looks like in practice:

That trajectory doesn’t work for every participant, especially those with higher support needs. But for most, over 18-24 months, it’s achievable — and we build it into the plan from the start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Almost anything legal that involves being part of the community — classes, clubs, sport, faith communities, volunteering, events, social outings. What it doesn’t fund: holidays, personal entertainment (concerts, movie tickets, meals out) or ongoing memberships. Those costs come from your own income. The NDIS funds the support worker; you fund the activity.
Community participation funding specifically covers activities in the community, not in-home support. If you need help with tasks at home, that’s Assistance with Daily Life, which is a separate category. Some activities that start at home (like cooking together before heading out to a community event) can be part of a community participation shift, but standing home-based support falls under a different budget line.
Yes. Group funding works slightly differently — the support worker cost is split across the participants in the group, which makes group activities more affordable per participant. We run several regular groups across our regions.
That depends on your goals. Most of our community participation participants run between 4 and 15 hours per week. If you’re trying to build skills for independent attendance, start higher and taper down. If you just want regular social contact, 4-6 hours a week is usually enough.
Yes. If you have a support worker who already knows you well from daily living support, we can often schedule their shifts to cover community participation too. Consistency matters more than job categorisation.
You can change what you do with your support worker at any time. The whole point of community participation is to find what you enjoy — if that turns out to be different from what you first tried, we’ll pivot.
